Near future. Medicine has advanced to the point where doctors can eliminate any genetic defects and inherited diseases immediately after a person's birth. Unfortunately, there is a whole generation of people who were born before this therapy was available. Society teaches them to cope with the healthy world through various programs, but it cannot make them normal. Until a certain moment.
Lou Arrendale is a representative of this lost generation. He leads a calm and independent life, except for annual visits to a psychologist. He has a stable job in a pharmaceutical company, has learned to look people in the eye, knows how to observe polite conventions in conversations, and does everything possible to be as normal as possible and not attract attention. But now his peaceful life is threatened. A new experimental treatment appears that can cure an adult from autism spectrum disorders. After it, Lou will become just like everyone else. But Lou has questions - if he gets rid of autism, will he still be himself? Will he still love classical music? See the same colors and patterns, shades and tones in the world that are inaccessible to others? And most importantly, will he still love Marjorie, the girl who will probably never reciprocate his feelings as long as he is sick?
Lou has to decide whether to agree to the operation that can completely change his worldview... and his very essence.
