In the fall of 1983, Michel Foucault reads a series of six lectures titled "Speech and Truth" at the University of California, Berkeley, for the first time presented in this book as a complete critical edition. These lectures clearly demonstrate the richness of the concept of parrhesia and its strategic role in Foucault's ethical and political reflections. In particular, Foucault explores the transformations of this concept in the ancient world: parrhesia, originally a political right of an Athenian citizen, becomes one of the main features of philosophical speech in Socrates, and then, among the Cynics and in philosophical life in general, to the extent that it can be provocative and even scandalous. Finally, in the first centuries of the Roman Empire, parrhesia becomes the foundation of relationships between teacher and student in the culture of the self. Engaging in the analysis of parrhesia, Foucault at the same time develops his own project of the history of the present and delineates the milestones of the genealogy of the critical attitude characteristic of modernity and the New Time. This edition also includes a decryption of a lecture given by Michel Foucault in May 1982 at the University of Grenoble to specialists in ancient philosophy, representing an earlier and somewhat different stage of his reflections on parrhesia.
