"Spanish tragedy" is the most famous work of the English playwright of Thomas Kida (1558-1594), which is considered to be the author of the so-called pra-"gamlet". Appearing around 1587, the Spanish tragedy became the most popular theatrical play in England at the turn of the XVI-XVII centuries and created the canon of the Elizavtian bloody tragedy of revenge. It was with this canon that the U. Shakespeare took the controversy in the period of the Theaters" War (1599-1601), he tried to rethink and transform it from the standpoint of the Christian worldview in his" Gamlet ".
Kid does not just use a fascinating plot built on love and revenge, and not only encourages its viewer (and now the reader) to hardly monitor the painful moral choice of the main character of Jeronimo - between the law, the Divine and personal justice. The playwright relies on the traditions of the medieval theater (Mystery, Farc), the declamination Roman tragedy (Seneca), artfully apply the reception "Theater in the theater", subsequently used by Shakespeare.
In addition to the first performed and exhaustively commented equitheretal translation of the "Spanish tragedy", the book includes "supplements" transfers (ed. 1602) to the "Spanish tragedy", presumably composed by Ben Johnson (1573-1637), and folk ballads, Created at the end of the XVI century based on the play T. Kida.
In the accompanying articles and comments "Spanish tragedy" and creativity, Kid are considered in their cultural and historical context, as well as the evolution of the genre of the tragedy of revenge in the works of Shakespeare and his younger fellow by profession. The study is studied by the Mystery Composition of the "Spanish Tragedy", the biblical plots used by Kidd in the sale of its actions (Calvary, the fall of Babylon) and contributed to its wide recognition.
