This book considers a number of fundamental issues of being, which people are set from time immemorial. How did our universe originate? Is the world in which we live, the result of mechanical processes occurring in inanimate, inert and reacting matter? Did you manage the creation and development of the Universe of the Supreme Space Mind? Is it possible to explain the material reality solely in terms of natural laws, or is the forces and principles that are not responsible for such descriptions?
What is the connection between life and matter, between consciousness and brain? How do we comprehend such dilemmas as the limb of time and space, on the one hand, and eternity and infinity - on the other? Where in the universe originates the order, form and meaning? Extremely relevant for everyday life and some other problems discussed in this book - for example, a contradiction between good and evil, the mystery of karma and reincarnation and the question of the meaning of human being.
As a professional psychiatrist, I know that such questions are usually not asked in the context of psychiatric practice or psychological research. Nevertheless, these urgent questions completely spontaneously arose in the minds of many people with whom I worked. The explanation should be sought in the area of research, which for forty years of my professional activity remains the main object of my interests, in working with the unusual states of consciousness. This interest broke out quite unexpectedly and brightly in 1956, just a few months after the end of the medical institute, when I voluntarily volunteered to participate in the experiment with LSD, held at the Faculty of Psychiatry Prague Medical Institute. This experiment was deeply influenced by my personal and professional life and became the creative incentive, thanks to which I was withdrawn myself with the research of consciousness.
And although I was interested in the whole range of unusual states of consciousness, my purely personal experience refers to psychedelic studies, to psychotherapeutic work with people experiencing sudden psychodukhovny crises (critical states of spirit), as well as holotropic respiratory therapy - a method developed by me And my wife Kristina. In psychedelic therapy, the unusual states of consciousness are caused by chemicals, in psycho-dry crises, for unknown reasons, they suddenly develop in the thick of everyday life, and in holotropic respiratory therapy they are stimulated by a combination of rapid respiration, music, awakening memories, and a special form of concentrated physical exercises. In this book, I touch on all three mentioned aspects, since the insights that open them are very similar, if not identical.
