Among the tragic consequences of the war with Nazi Germany - colossal human losses and destruction - the Soviet Union had to face the problem of assisting millions of traumatized and maimed individuals who returned from the front to civilian life. Mark Edele's book traces the history of Great Patriotic War veterans from the early post-war years to the collapse of the USSR in 1991. The historian shows how within the Soviet regime, a popular movement of former front-line soldiers emerged and developed, aiming to achieve recognition of their contributions to the country and rights to various privileges. To do this, they had to overcome resistance from the state, which was reluctant to acknowledge them as a separate social group, suspected them of political disloyalty, and was unwilling to bear the costs of granting veterans special status. The author aims to demonstrate how in 1978, despite resistance from official institutions and the strengthening war cult, former front-line soldiers still managed to achieve their desired goals. Mark Edele is a historian, specialist in the Soviet Union, and a professor at the University of Melbourne.
