Soviet partisans - about six thousand fighters, making up half of the foreign contingent in the Italian Resistance, enjoyed well-deserved respect among their comrades for several reasons. Unlike most former prisoners of war from other nations - the British, Americans, and others - they rejected the offered opportunity to escape to neutral Switzerland, preferring to remain in combat, they had serious military experience and often acted as "teachers" for other partisans, they were ideologically armed against Nazi fascism, embodying the triumphant Red Army in Italy, especially after the Battle of Stalingrad. The history of Soviet partisans in the Northern Adriatic, in the Trieste area, where both Italian and Yugoslav patriots operated, often with different goals, turned out to be complex and interesting.
