Over the past decades, starting with perestroika, hundreds of memoirs, diaries, notes and other autobiographical documents have been published in Russia, indicating the Soviet era and summing up its result. With all the variety, they tell about the lives lived under the influence of historical disasters, such as the Stalinist terror and war. After the fall of Soviet power, the publication of these works formed a community of people who gained access to each other"s intimate life and thoughts. In her book, Irina Paperno explores this giant array of documents, identifying in them general topics, trends and forms. Among the many publications, the author separately considers two, choosing them for emotional power, the scale of thinking and the literary gift: the famous "Notes about Anna Akhmatova" Lidia Korneevna Chukovskaya and notebooks Evgenia Grigoryevna Kiseleva, a semi -literate elderly peasant woman who decided to provide material for the film script about her life. Detecting amazing parallels and contrasts between these works, the author shows how Soviet history and the Soviet state formed the fate of such different people in many respects. One of the important plots of the books was the interpretation of dreams, in which it was also not without the invasion of the state and history - it was basically nightmares. The peasants, and party leaders, and famous writers and, finally, Joseph Stalin himself saw similar dreams. Irina Paperno is a literary critic, a historian of ideas, a professor at the Department of Slavicism of the University of California in Berkeley
