The book by cultural studies scholar Daria Zhurkova is one of the first comprehensive studies of Soviet and Russian popular music of the 1980s-1990s. The question posed in the title is not without irony: the author criticizes the common disregard for pop music in intellectual circles, showing how entertainment music culture becomes a barometer of the social and political moods of a turbulent era. The book pays special attention to the aesthetic analysis of pop music, as well as its visual expression in music videos and TV shows of that time. The researcher does not limit herself to the declared historical period, analyzing the nostalgic reinterpretation of the legacy of the perestroika culture in pop music of the last decades. As a result, we have a multifaceted study demonstrating how deeply "frivolous" music reflects both history and the present. Daria Zhurkova is a candidate of cultural studies and a senior research fellow at the State Institute of Art Studies.
