"Variations on the topic of Chopin" were created in 1903 and to some extent are the composition of the "laboratory"-reflecting the search for Rachmaninov (1873-1943) in the field of piano texture. The cycle is based on the famous pre -minor prelude, reduced by the composer to eighttakt. "Variations on the topic of Corelli" is one of the later works of Rachmaninov. Variations are dedicated to Fritz Kreisler, whom Rachmaninov considered the best violinist of our time. The theme in the genre of folia, which is the basis of the cycle, is one of the early known topics of European music. Corelli used Folic in the twelfth sonata for the violin, creating a cycle of variations on its basis.
