Tchaikovsky began working on the Twelve Players cycle in February 1878 during his residence in Florence. It included plays of traditional genres of household music (waltz, mazurka, sketch, scherzo) and the romantic genre of songs without words. Opus has a dedication to Tchaikovsky’s brother Modest Ilyich, who supported and shared with the composer all the hardships of this period.
