The vocal cycle “Overcoming” on the verses of Russian poets for voice and piano is the first attempt by the novice composer Valery Makarov to penetrate into poetic images, feel and express them in the musical language, combining poetic lines with a common idea, as well as musical thematism. Each of the romances is dedicated to the outstanding personalities of the world of art associated with the history of Elena Obraztsova’s contest, and resembles a small play, where in all versatility and nuances, the inner world of a person seeking to achieve the intended goal through overcoming himself is revealed.
