"Songs of the Wanderer" on the verses of the Chinese poets of the Tang era are one of the most mysterious and innovative works of G.V. Sviridov for his time. Written in the first winter of the Great Patriotic War in Novosibirsk, they are not thematically related to military realities. The philosophical system, contemplation and the detached depth of Chinese poetry in the translations of the outstanding Russian synologist Yu. K. Schutsky became the starting point for the creation of a six-part vocal cycle-poem, descriptions of wanderings long into human life. According to the author, this composition carries in itself the sense of the East and at the same time lost, as if a provincial life. Returning to Leningrad in 1944. The composer intended to orquate him. But the unfavorable situation in the local union of composers, after the Sviridov was declared formalist, did not contribute to the implementation of this plan. Subsequently, Sviridov never returned to his first experience in the genre of large vocal cyclic shape. The work completes the early period of the author’s work and carries the features characteristic of the "mature" stage with his lyro-epic poem, the greatness of feelings and thoughts.
