Lydia Chukovskaya (1907–1996) was a prose writer, poet, publicist, literary critic, and memoirist. She is the author of books such as "Notes on Anna Akhmatova," "In the Editor's Laboratory," "The Past and Thoughts of Herzen," "In Memory of Childhood," "On This Side of Death," and others.
This edition includes three cherished books by Lydia Chukovskaya.
Two are works of fiction, and one is a documentary. The very fact of writing the first of them, on the border of 1939 and 1940, seems like a true miracle.
These stories seem to "grow" from one another and "sprout" into each other: before us is a kind of box with a triple bottom, a tall and tragic triptych, a symphony of classical prose. Rereading "Sophia Petrovna," "Going Under," and the unfinished "Cross-Out," I cannot help but think of what unique writer-companion another sympathetic reader might discover.
