What is populism?

In his innovative work, Yan-Averner Müller claims that the basis of populism is the rejection of pluralism. Populists always declare that they, and only they, represent the true interests of the people. Müller shows that, contrary to widespread opinion, populists can carry out a rule on the basis of their claims to an exceptional moral representation on behalf of the people: if the populists have enough power, they eventually create an authoritarian state in which everyone who does not belong to the "true people ", will be excluded from the political process.
The book proposes a number of specific strategies that could help liberal democrats understand what to do with populists and how, in particular, to confront their claims for exceptional representation on behalf of the "silent majority" or "true people".
