The book of politician and journalist Nikolai Kabanov is devoted to the analysis of Latvian political life at the beginning of the 21st century. Based on his own knowledge and impressions obtained during the first term of stay as a deputy of the Sejm Latvia (2002-2006), the author reveals the details of the public and backstat activity of representatives of the authorities and the opposition and affects the main issues of the internal and foreign policy agenda: the government leapfrog, the entry of Latvia in EU and NATO contrary to dissatisfaction and warnings of Russia, participation in the Iraqi war, a dispute around the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
The author pays considerable attention to political leadership in the Russian -speaking environment, the formation and collapse of party projects, the techniques of political pressure in parliament and local media, a polemic around Russian schools, which put Latvia on the line of interethnic civil conflict.
