His predecessors - the destroyer of the Republic, Julius Caesar and the founder of the August Principle - gained power after cruel civil wars. At the same time, Roman historians are mostly extremely harsh to him: he is glorified by Tacitus and Suetonius as a cruel, ruthless tyrant. And modern scientists argue both about the personality of Tiberius and the significance of his reign.
