In the first volume of his capital historical work, clarifying the origins of the political thought of the New Age, Quentin Skinner sets out the methodological principles of his study and explains how they differ from the traditional "textualist" approach. In the first part of Tom, we are talking about the history of the republican ideal of freedom, which began to form in the 12th - early XIV century in the cities of Northern Italy thanks to local legal and rhetorical culture, as well as under the influence of scholasticism. The second part is devoted to the history of political thought of the 15th century: Skinner is interested in the question of how different from the previous tradition and, in particular, to what extent, the Machiavelli inherits and transforms the humanistic concept of virtue. The spread of humanistic scholarship, which took place in the XV - beginning of the 16th century outside Italy, is the content of the third part of the volume. On the example of the works of Erasmus of Rotterdam, Thomas Mora, the English theorists of the General Good, Skinner shows how the traditional humanistic attitude to the virtues of the ruler, war and social inequality changes
