Justin Vir considers complex relationships between the author’s self -reflection and the literary tradition in the three most famous Russian novels of the first half of the twentieth century: "Master and Margarita" Mikhail Bulgakov, "Dr. Zhivago" Boris Pasternak and "Dar" Vladimir Nabokov.

The original reading of these novels reveals a significant shift that occurred in the Russian tradition of the psychological prose of the 20th century. According to Vir, all three novelists in their own way answer a double crisis that characterizes their time: the general modernist destabilization of identity and alienation from the literary tradition that happened after the 1917 revolution.

Using various literary techniques of self -reflection (for example, Mise En Abyme), these authors again include a literary tradition in their works, thus creating a special view of a person.

The hero in these novels is not the result of a continuous development process and not a direct consequence of the individual’s attitude to larger historical events. Rather, the hero is determined in the act of writing, so each hero is also a kind of author.

As a result, a new type of novel appears, which focuses on the personality of the artist revealing in the process of writing.

Thanks to the innovative interpretation of these novels and convincing historical, cultural and theoretical insights", the author as a hero offers a new look at an important moment in the evolution of Russian literature
