Before the readers is the famous book of an outstanding historian, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences E.V. Tarle, the hero of which was the French politician and diplomat of the late XVIII - early XIX centuries, who held high posts under several regimes, whose name became a household name to designate unprincipled and political conformism.
The book is written on a wide historical material with the inherent E.V. Tarla with high literary skill. In the portrait of Talleyrand drawn by the author, not only the personal selfish features of this person are revealed, but also the most typical general features of bourgeois diplomacy, its historical traditions.
