The readers are a book, which included the chosen works of an outstanding English natural scientist, a chemist who discovered oxygen, philosopher and public figure Joseph Pristley. The book consists of three parts. The first of them includes the author’s main philosophical works, which provided him with a prominent place in the history of materialism, despite his religious beliefs. The second part gives two political pamphlets, in which the political views of Pristles received the most complete and vivid conclusion. In the first of them, the author reflects on the principles of public administration and the nature of political and civil freedom, and in the second discusses the great French revolution and its influence on politics, including the expansion of freedom. The third part contains extracts from work on natural science, from which the author approached the discovery of oxygen, and also outlined very valuable methodological principles and considerations in connection with some attempts to generalize and build hypotheses.
