Today, the majority considers the type of government, opposing the monarchy, the republic. In the first case, people elect their rulers, in the second - kings or kings transfer power to their heirs. However, from the time of Cicero to the American revolution of 1776 or even the French Revolution of 1789, the monarchy was considered as the form of the republic. There are many questions here. How was it possible and how, starting from the 19th century, we suddenly began to believe that the monarchy and the republic are incompatible and that the republic is immeasurably exceeding the monarchy morally? What helps us to see in the history of freedom in Europe and Russia the classical Roman theory of Res Publica and why is liberalism in our time not the only opportunity to protect the freedom of an individual citizen? You can find answers to these questions in the book of Oleg Harhordin - professor of the faculty of political sciences of the European University in St. Petersburg, head of the Research Center "Res Publica" EUSPB
