Historian and folklorist Alexander Nikolaevich Afanasyev (1826-1871) is very widely known as the publisher of “People’s Russian Tales”. He was a deep researcher of Slavic traditions, beliefs and customs. The result of his many years of research experience was the "poetic views of the Slavs to nature" - a fundamental work on the historical and philological analysis of the language and folklore of the Slavs in connection with the language and folklore of other Indo -European peoples. His work is still not surpassed in the world science of folklore. He is significantly inferior to him by the “golden branch” of J. Fraser and the “primitive culture” of E. Taylor.
Afanasyev’s book reveals the living connections of language and legends, moreover, it resurrects the foundations of Russian thinking, which is especially important now, in the era of the total influence of the information society on the human inner world.
In the second volume of the "poetic views of the Slavs to nature", the consideration of the mythological representations of the Slavs about the basic elements of the universe continues, the traditions of the creation of the world and man, the change of generations of people, the tree of life, the snake-guessor are analyzed.
The publication is addressed to students and teachers of humanitarian specialties, as well as all lovers of Russian literature.
