The book reveals and analyzes the philosophical foundations and research paradigms of the concepts of the essence, origin and evolution of nations and nationalism competing in the social sciences, their methodological advantages and disadvantages are evaluated. A new, socio-philosophical, the basis of interdisciplinary synthesis is proposed, which allows us to propose an understanding of the main definitions of the theory of nations and nationalism acceptable for most specialists. The historical forms of nationalism, the vectors of national integration and the ways of forming nations in Western, Central and Eastern Europe are considered. The role of ethnic nationalism is studied in the disintegration of tsarist Russia and the USSR. In this regard, a set of measures is proposed for the formation of a Russian nation as a civil and cultural community and improving Russian federalism on the basis of the concept of “nation-state”.
