Based on studies conducted in 1996-1998, the book of Julie Hemment traces the history of the female movement in post-Soviet Russia and its interaction with non-governmental organizations. With the help of ethnographic optics, the Hemment analyzes the activities of activists of the nineties using the example of the Tver group "Women"s Light". Since the ideas about the ideal civil society among activists and sponsor organizations often did not coincide, the work of such organizations usually balanced between the feeling of boundless opportunities and misunderstanding by NGOs and funds
