This book is a generalizing review of interdisciplinary research of recent years devoted to evolutionary aspects of the emergence and development of cooperation and altruism in humans. It examines the phylogenetic panorama of the stages of the evolution of cooperation in living nature, which will allow the reader to comprehend not only the global cooperation, as the immanent properties of the social system as a whole, but at the same time evaluate a distinct increase in the role of cooperation and mutual assistance in phylogenesis. Manifestations of cooperation and mutual assistance in humans will be represented through the prism of individual and group (as well as multi -level) selection. The book discusses the possible reasons for the development of cooperation among human ancestors and its features in traditional unratestified and modern industrial societies. Attention is paid to the issues of cooperation between the sexes, parenthood and mutual assistance in caring for children, the formation of friendly ties and the role of these connections in the adult life of people. It is considered how the behavior of mutual assistance and cooperation is formed in the process of individual development, and what role the direct social environment plays in this process. This work presents field materials collected by authors personally in the process of working among stray hunters-gatherers, cattle breeders and motorcycle farmers of East Africa-the on observation, polls and experimental studies were conducted among adults and among children and adolescents. A special place in the book is given the issues of applying the theory of games to identify the general mechanisms of human cooperation and describe complex experiments conducted by the authors in recent years in Russia and Tanzania.
The publication will be useful to students, graduate students, teachers and a wide range of readers who are interested in altruism and cooperation, as well as adjacent problems
