The book of a British journalist and documentary director Francis Doners for the first time presents shocking evidence of CIA manipulations in the field of cultural policy during the Cold War. Based on the scrupulously collected archival information, the author describes the activities of the CIA to financing and coordinating the left -wing intellectuals and cultural figures in Western Europe and the United States in order to alienate the intelligentsia from left -wing ideas, to persuade it to the struggle against the USSR and instill sympathy for the “American path”. Congress created and supervised by the CIA for freedom of culture with offices in 35 countries was the main mechanism and platform for this work, which involved such famous writers and philosophers as Raymond Aron, Andre Malro, Arthur Kostler, George Orwell and many others. The book is especially relevant in the context of the development of “soft power” methods in Russia: the author reveals the details of who and how built the foundation of the “soft power” of the United States
