In this book, written by an outstanding Soviet historian, academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences E.V. Tarle, the Chesmensky battle and the first expedition of the Russian Baltic Fleet in the Archipelago (as the islands of the Aegean) during the Russian-Turkish war of 1768–174 are described. The details of the battle in the Chesmensky bay on the west coast of Anatolia, where the Russian fleet won over the superior forces of the Turks, the battle ended the destruction of the entire Turkish fleet. The stages of a military campaign are described in detail, when Russian ships that have no own sea bases entered the Mediterranean Sea, circling the entire coast of Western Europe, this dangerous campaign, which could end in a catastrophe, ended with a brilliant victory. It is shown that both the victory with Chesme and the entire expedition to the archipelago were the result of the brilliant combat qualities of the Russian fleet and the operation of Russian diplomacy.
It is recommended for historians, social scholars, political scientists, as well as a wide circle of readers interested in the history of Russia, Russian military art and Russian diplomacy.
