The small island of San Piedro is so isolated that its inhabitants cannot afford to make enemies. They honor traditions, and memories of the war are still alive in their minds.
In 1954, a tragedy occurs when the body of local fisherman Carl Heine is found in the waters of Puget Sound. Kabuo Miyamoto, an American of Japanese descent, is accused of the murder. All the island's residents follow the trial, and the case is covered by the editor of the local newspaper and war veteran Ishmael Chambers.
Many years ago, Ishmael had a romance with a Japanese girl, Hatsue, who grew up and married Kabuo. In search of justice, the journalist begins his own investigation, and he faces a difficult choice between his feelings and his conscience.
