The fairy tale play "Snegurochka" is unlike all of A. N. Ostrovsky's (1823–1886) previous works. Perhaps that is why it was not appreciated at the time of its publication in 1873. Contemporary audiences simply did not understand or accept the conventionality of the situation and characters, expecting from Ostrovsky detailed realism and grotesque images. "The light-winged nymph Snegurochka" marked the beginning of a new era in Russian theater: it was a move from domestic action to the symbolically-conventional theater of the Silver Age.
The edition with new illustrations by Ekaterina Komrakova is being released in honor of the 200th anniversary of A. N. Ostrovsky's birth and the 150th anniversary of the publication of the famous play.
