The novel, which is a bestseller in The Sunday Times, is written by the award-winning creator of Downton Abbey and the Oscar-winning writer of Gosford Park. Edith Lavery is a woman determined to climb the social ladder. As the attractive only child of a middle-class accountant, she leaves her boring job at a Chelsea estate agency and successfully lands one of the most eligible bachelors of the time - Charles Broughton, the heir to the Marquess of Uckfield. However, life among the upper echelons of 'good' society is not as glamorous as it appears. Edith soon realizes that there is more to the aristocracy than just social events, hunting, and proper etiquette. She also has to contend with Charles's formidable mother, Lady Uckfield, known as 'Googie' to her friends, who is not pleased with her son's choice of partner. With plenty of twists and turns, this comical story is reminiscent of a modern-day Jane Austen novel.
