The monograph contains descriptions of 49 cuts, the conditions of the burial and the composition of the faun of small mammals of the pliocen-playystocene of the Russian plain. For the first time, a detailed analysis of the morphology of the insectivorous, hare and rodents of these faunes was performed. Tables have been compiled to determine fossil insectivaries. The habitat and dynamics of communities of small mammals of the Russian plain and adjacent territories over the past 3.5-3 million years are shown. A new model of the evolution of Polevkov (Arvicolidae), the most important group of rodents of the northern hemisphere, has been proposed. General issues of mammalian evolution are discussed. The justification of the biostratigraphic dismemberment of the continental deposits of the pliocoro-playistocene of the Russian plain is given. The correlation schemes of the faun of small mammals of the Russian plain, Siberia, Transbaikalia, Central and Western Europe are given. For paleontologists, geologists, paleogeographers
