Many years after the death of his uncle, Anthony Passeron decides to tell the story of his family. He talks about how his grandparents worked hard in a butcher shop to provide for their children's future. About how his father followed in their footsteps. And about how his uncle Desiré - the family's hope - stumbled into a trap that destroyed a whole generation of young people.
The author weaves together two closely intertwined stories: the tragedy that shook several generations of his family to the core, and the story of doctors desperately fighting against denial and ignorance in attempts to solve the mystery of a mysterious disease that turned many thousands of people into outcasts.
