We live in an era characterized by radical inequality of income and wealth and the rapid exhaustion of rare natural resources. One of the things that prevent us from solving and, possibly, even to realize these problems, is our conviction that the claims of individuals and corporations to certain resources and income streams are non -absorbed, even when these claims clearly conflict with our common long -term interests. This book is an attempt to understand how, why and when we have a faith in these things. In the first volume, the ideas of private property and its excuses in the Latin West, starting with the ancient Greeks, are traced. Then the course of thought from Rome to the Middle Ages is considered and the deep influence of the emergence of Christianity and the consolidation of natural and Roman law are shown. The author pays much attention to the complex interaction of religious and legal ideas, which developed in the Renaissance, Reformation and Counter -Reformation and leading to the formation of ideas related to modern natural law. The first volume ends with the revision of Locke"s ideas. The author gives good arguments in favor of private property, but shows that these arguments were almost always conditional, accompanied by serious reservations and were based on the idea of ensuring the common good
