The novel "Salammbo" was published in 1862, when its author's name—Gustave Flaubert—had already gained widespread recognition thanks to his previously published novel "Madame Bovary". Working on "Salammbo" required Flaubert to travel to the East and North Africa—three months he spent in Tunisia, studying historical sources. "Salammbo" was enthusiastically received by the public, satiated with the prevailing realistic direction in literature: dresses in the "Punic" style became fashionable, and just a year later, the second French edition of the novel saw the light. In 1862, the first Russian translation of "Salammbo" appeared. In 1877, Flaubert published a cycle of three stories, each of which can be associated with one of his previously published works: "The Legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller" with "The Temptation of Saint Anthony", "A Simple Heart" with the novel "Madame Bovary", and "Herodias" with the novel "Salammbo", making the cycle perceived as a kind of anthology that summarizes the writer's creative work. For the Russian-speaking reader, these short works of Gustave Flaubert are also notable because the translation of two of them was done by I.S. Turgenev.
