Pavel Petrovich Bazhov (1879-1950) was born in the Ural city of Sysert. His mother was a skilled lace maker, and his father worked as a master at a factory built here during the time of Peter the Great. As a boy, Pavel moved to Yekaterinburg and entered a school, later graduating from the famous Perm Theological Seminary. At the age of twenty, Bazhov became a public teacher, then worked as a journalist, editor, wrote books on the history of the Urals, and collected folklore. In 1924, Bazhov's first book "Ural Tales" was published - memories of pre-revolutionary life at the Sysert factories, and in 1939, his most famous work was published - the collection of tales "The Malachite Casket". Since ancient times, people have had beliefs that underground treasures are guarded by magical creatures. Bazhov heard stories about the Mistress of the Copper Mountain, the Great Serpent, the mysterious Gumeshki mine, Granny Sinyushka, and her bottomless well of gems from his own family and at the factory. All these folklore characters became the protagonists of his tales, where fairy tales intricately intertwined with real life. "The Malachite Casket" was expanded with new tales year after year. It brought Bazhov nationwide fame - he was awarded the State Prize. In 1944, Bazhov was awarded the Order of Lenin. The collection of tales "The Malachite Casket" rightfully entered the treasury of world literature.
