The Battle of Leningrad is the longest land military campaign of the Second World War. It lasted a full four years - from July 1941 to July 1944. Over 872 days of the siege of Leningrad, the city's residents and the soldiers defending it went through incredibly difficult trials: bombings, artillery shelling, fires, hunger, cold, thirst, and constant fear of death. Leningrad was a front line where there was no rear, a city doomed to slow and agonizing death, but it endured because it was defended by iron-willed people. The incredible story of the defense of Leningrad during the war years resounded around the world. Now, with archives opened and historians given the opportunity to work with previously classified documents, the greatness of the Leningraders' feat has shone in all its glory. The book is dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the final lifting of the blockade of Leningrad.
