Mikhail Sholokhov is one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, the author of epic works dedicated to the revolutionary events in Russia, primarily in his native Upper Don region. Considered a Soviet patriot and a staunch communist, he was constantly criticized, defended victims of repression, and narrowly escaped the wrath of zealous Chekists. Beloved by millions of readers, he was an outsider to the envious literary elite, among whom the unfounded version still persists that his most famous novel, "Quiet Flows the Don," was not written by him, but by another author or a group of "literary Negroes."
