The methods and the latest most interesting results of experimental studies on the strength properties, polymorphism, and metastable states of materials and substances under extremely short durations of shock-wave impact are presented. An anomalous increase in the stress of plastic flow with increasing temperature at high deformation rates has been discovered. An approximation to the maximum possible (ideal) volumetric and shear strength of solids has been achieved. New data on the mechanism and basic regularities of submicrosecond polymorphic transformations and phase transitions have been obtained. An analysis of the behavior of high-hardness brittle materials under shock-wave loading and possible ways of diagnosing compression failure is presented. Destruction waves in shock-compressed glasses have been discovered and studied. A number of specific features of the dynamics of elastic-plastic shock waves in relaxing media have been discovered, which are still awaiting interpretation and theoretical description. A detailed description of the theoretical basis of the method and a brief discussion of the main methods of generating and diagnosing shock waves in solids precede the presentation of the main results. The book is based on the results of many years of research mainly supported by the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, as well as programs of fundamental research of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Russian Science Foundation, and is aimed at specialists in the field of high dynamic pressure physics, metal physics, strength and plasticity physics and mechanics.
