Annotation to the book 'Shakespeare. His Life and Works' by R. Genée: Readers are offered a historical and literary work by the famous German writer Rudolf Genée (1824--1914), dedicated to the study of the life and creativity of the most famous English playwright and poet W. Shakespeare. The first section of the book not only presents Shakespeare's biography but also examines the state of English theatre in his time and explores the creativity of the great master's predecessors. The second section presents an analysis of Shakespeare's most famous works. The author tries to determine the time of origin of each play, clarify its artistic plan, and through careful comparison of Shakespeare's dramas with their sources, attempts to uncover the secret of the artistic technique Shakespeare followed in creating his works. The book, representing 'the best of existing foreign language guides to the study of Shakespeare's works', will be useful both to specialists in literary studies and to everyone interested in the creativity of one of the world's most famous playwrights. It can also be recommended to students of theatrical universities as a manual on the history of Western European theatre.
