This collection of illustrations is based on the original collection of engravings by John Boydell, a key figure in British printing in the field of fine art publishing at the end of the 18th century.
The basis of this edition is a collection of engravings for the 9-volume edition of William Shakespeare's dramatic works and a separate 2-volume luxury, richly illustrated large-format art edition with 'Shakespearean' engravings, published in 1803 in London.
More than 100 reproductions reproduce engravings made from paintings by the most outstanding masters of painting and bas-relief of that time for the Boydell publishing house ('John & Josiah Boydell') and the famous 'Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery', distinguished by the unique unsurpassed technique of the 'golden age' of the English graphic school. The sources for the high-quality collection of illustrations were engravings provided by the State Hermitage, the State Museum of Fine Arts named after A.S. Pushkin, and the Scientific Library of Tomsk State University.
This excellent edition of time-tested British classic engraving illustrations will undoubtedly attract the widest range of lovers and admirers of visual and engraving art and world literature.
