The novel-chronicle "Kandaly" by Stepan Gavrilovich Petrov-Skitalts (1869-1941) is the story of a Volga village from the 1880s to the 1905 revolution. At the center of events is the Volga village of Kandaly, which can easily be recognized as Obsharovka, the writer's homeland, as well as in all the characters of the novel - their living prototypes. The plot is based on the seizure of state lands by the Samara millionaire merchant Shikhobalov, the impoverishment of peasants and small industrialists under the pressure of big capital, and the beginning of revolutionary ferment. In vivid storytelling, the reader is presented with the entire "external and internal appearance of the village": rituals, customs, work, songs, legends, traditions, and fistfights. Skitalts, showing different social strata, lovingly depicts extraordinary people from the common folk and their unchanging thirst for justice.
