The textbook contains a systematic exposition of the basic principles of cultural semiotics - a discipline that has had a significant influence on the development of global humanities in the second half of the 20th century. It discusses general issues of semiotics - the definition and structure of signs, primary and secondary sign relations, semiosis and mimesis, as well as a number of specific sign systems, most commonly addressed in the study of literature (language and literature, visual systems, narrative, semiotic aspects of behavior and monetary circulation, the general structure of sign culture). The ideas of leading semiotics theorists such as Roland Barthes, Umberto Eco, Yuri Lotman, and others are presented. The theoretical exposition is accompanied by numerous examples, mostly taken from language, literary arts, and other forms of art. The book is recommended for philology students studying in bachelor's and master's programs, as well as for graduate students.
