The image of the artist is one of the most interesting and most complex topics in art. European tradition of the XVIII-XX centuries, developing the ideas of the Italian Humanists of the Renaissance, put a man-creator in the center of the Universe. And although any work is a continuation of the master, self-portrait is a completely special genre. In the era of romanticism, when the role of the artist, his unique individuality, rose to an inaccessible height, the interest in self-portrait reached apogee. However, afterwards, in the second half of the XIX century, an inevitable contradiction arose between a unique person who creates his own world, and a new time - era of cars. The role and place of the artist in society is changing. He continues to be a servant of the music and chosen of the gods, but already in the separation from real reality, in the "ivory tower".
The main part of the publication is images of artists. Becoming in the profession stand or sit at the table, look at the viewer, rest or work in the workshop. As a rule, they are accompanied by the attributes of the type of art to which portrayed themselves devoted themselves. Thus, the Austrian artist I.-B. Lypi junior invested in the hands of the painter I.A.Akimova, the folder with drawings and pencil, P.I. Rimezov put in front of the architect A.A. Mikhailov II plan one of its buildings, and S.S. .Erhov wrote a landscape player M.N. Vorobyva with a palette and brushes sitting in front of the canvas. Belgian painter V. De Gronkel in the portrait of architect K.Atona placed the drawing of the christ of Christ the Savior in Moscow (on the table), and on the wall - watercolor with the facade of this cathedral. The most unusual composition is the portrait of the sculptor V.I. Demut-Malinovsky G.A. Krylova, who managed to achieve monumentality and expressiveness with a minimum of artistic agents.
