From the pen of Camille Saint-Saëns (1835-1921) came about a hundred chamber vocal compositions to his own texts and the poems of V. Hugo, C. Leconte de Lisle, J. Barbier, and others. Alongside C. Gounod, G. Bizet, L. Delibes, J. Massenet, and other French composers, Saint-Saëns developed a new type of romance. This updated genre was aimed at a larger audience rather than salon performances. Regarding vocal compositions, the composer often uses the term "melodie." This edition is intended for students of music schools and universities, as well as professional performers.
