The translation from Spanish of the book "The World Through the Eyes of an Eighty-Year-Old: Impressions of an Arteriosclerotic" is presented. Its author, Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852–1934), was a great Spanish scientist, neurobiologist, brain structure researcher, Nobel Prize laureate, who also became famous for his philosophical, literary, and popular science works.
In the book, the scientist analyzes the aging processes based on self-observation. It describes the senile degradation of vision and hearing organs, compares the perception of one's own deafness with similar impairments in Goya and Beethoven. An assessment of insomnia in the elderly, the hallucinoid aspect of dreams is conducted. The stages of psychic involution, splitting of consciousness, senile eccentricities, etc., are objectively analyzed. A critical review of contemporary authors' theories of aging is provided.
