Vadim Kozovoy (1937-1999) - a well-known poet, prose writer, translator, and literary critic. Before the reader is a book of Russian and French essayistic prose by the poet, a full-fledged heir of two cultures, a convinced person of the inter-world. Compiled after his death, it brings together works spanning over thirty years, diverse in subject matter, circumstances of expression, genre composition, but unified in the direction of thought and tone of speech. It is a philosophical self-reflection of the poet on the work and place of poetry, its very possibility in the modern world, essays on the heroes and pillars of the word of the latest era (Mallarmé and Valéry, Reverdy and Michaux, Marina Tsvetaeva and Benedikt Livshits). Notes on older friends - P. Suvtchinsky, N. Khadzhiev, and others - are complemented by substantive letters from the first half of the 1980s to his wife. Every word in the book is driven by the blood interest of a direct participant, the scorching fervor of debate, and that "exterminating tenderness" noted in Kozovoy's verses by Maurice Blanchot.
