In 1692, a few years before the beginning of Peter the Great's reforms, stolnik (a high-ranking courtier) Andrey Ivanovich Lyzlov completed the first comprehensive scholarly monograph in Russia, "Scythian History." The subject of the work was the relationships between nomadic, "Scythian," and sedentary peoples in Europe, Asia, and North Africa from antiquity to the 17th century, with the author considering the Ottoman Turks and Crimean Tatars as the latter "Scythians." Lyzlov meticulously referenced sources from Russian, Polish, and Western European historiography available to him. The author's conclusions, based on a unique Russian perspective on the world not seen in global science at the time, far surpassed his era. Lyzlov managed to create a rich, captivating, profound, and dramatic narrative. He was not the first scholarly historian in Russia before its "Europeanization" by Peter the Great, but the best of them, a predecessor not only to V.N. Tatishchev but even to N.M. Karamzin.
