A collection of one of the founders of Soviet science fiction literature, Alexander Romanovich Belyaev, includes the novel "Island of Sunken Ships". A collection of one of the founders of Soviet science fiction literature, Alexander Romanovich Belyaev, includes the novel "Island of Sunken Ships", three stories: "Radiopolis", "Eternal Bread", "Amphibian Man", the screenplay "When the Light Goes Out", as well as eleven stories, including the story "Professor Dowell's Head". The texts are printed according to the first newspaper, magazine, and book editions, together with the published illustrations. Adventure novel "Island of Sunken Ships" was completed by Alexander Romanovich Belyaev by 1926 and published in parts in the magazine "World Pathfinder". A separate edition of the novel was released in 1927. This work rightfully became a classic of Soviet science fiction. The exotic setting is the distant and mysterious Sargasso Sea in the Atlantic, the remains of ancient ships, a German submarine, incredible adventures of colorful characters from the capitalist world, including a detective, a criminal, a billionaire's daughter - all of this made a strong impression on the discerning Soviet reader of quality science fiction in the first third of the 20th century. Nowadays, "Island of Sunken Ships" is read with no less interest. It is not surprising that in the last quarter of the 20th century, a musical and a dystopian film were made based on this novel. This collection also includes other works by the writer, thanks to which Belyaev rightfully became one of the founders of Soviet science fiction. Among them is the famous novel "Amphibian Man", the story "Professor Dowell's Head", and many other works, known far beyond Russia. Belyaev began his literary career with reports on theatrical productions. He wrote about musical premieres and published feuilletons. Success came when Belyaev was already over forty. Herbert Wells wrote that he was slightly envious of the success of his novels, and there were quite a few of them before the war. In the 1930s, Belyaev became fascinated with space. He began corresponding with Tsiolkovsky and dedicated his novel "Star KETs" to him. Belyaev's last book published during his lifetime was the novel "Ariel". It was published shortly before the start of the Great Patriotic War. In the 1920s, Belyaev actively collaborated with the magazines "World Pathfinder", "Struggle of the Worlds", and "Around the World". Many of his works were first published on their pages, later appearing as separate books. In this edition, all the texts of Belyaev's works are presented in their original magazine versions, which often differ from the versions included in the writer's collected works. Sometimes there is a different ending in the magazines, as in "Professor Dowell's Head". The book uses illustrations from the first magazine publications of the writer's novels and stories. In this regard, this edition is unique - it allows fans of Belyaev's science fiction to experience the same emotions and impressions that the first readers of his novelties in periodicals received, to become owners of rare texts and illustrations.
