It contains an analysis of a wide range of problems of loan theory and the most difficult issues of its use in the modern economy. On the basis of the generalization of numerous literary sources, covering a long historical period, starting from usury, views of mercantilists, physiocrats and classics of economic theory up to modern works, the author gave a wide picture of the formation and development of loan theory. For the first time in Russian literature, the most detailed analysis of the views of various generations of researchers about the essence, functions and role of the loan in social development is presented.
