The book of one of the famous primatologists of the world of France de Vaal is devoted to the evolutionary sources of human nature, its duality and biological roots. De Vaal considers the four key sides of our nature - the desire for power, the need for sex, a tendency to acts of violence and manifestations of kindness - and based on many years of observation of humanoid monkeys, proves that all this is fully characteristic of them. In his work, he gives arguments in favor of the idea of a person as a social animal, a “bipolar monkey”, equally similar to aggressive, tending chimpanzees and empathic hedonists-bobobos. Without ignoring the low sides of human nature, de Vaal pays special attention to its positive, moral manifestations and how these two parties are combined and complemented by each other, being equally important for the evolution of our type and for the survival of civilization as a whole
